Objective of the game

Small-sided soccer is a fast-paced version of the game played with fewer players on a smaller field, emphasizing quick decision-making, skill development, and teamwork. The goal is to score more goals than the opposing team before time expires.

Players & Equipment

  • Players:
    • Games can be played as 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3.
    • No goalkeepers are used unless otherwise specified.
  • Equipment:
    • 1 Soccer Ball: Size 3, 4, or 5, depending on age and skill level.
    • Goals: Small pop-up goals, cones, or mini goalposts.
    • Field Markings: A smaller playing area (see setup).
    • Bib/Pinnies: If needed to differentiate teams.

 

Game Setup

  1. Field Dimensions
  • 1v1: 15-20 yards long × 10-15 yards wide
  • 2v2: 20-25 yards long × 15-20 yards wide
  • 3v3: 25-30 yards long × 20-25 yards wide
  • No penalty area unless goalkeepers are used.
  1. Choosing Teams & Kickoff
  • coin toss or rock-paper-scissors determines the starting team.
  • The game begins with a kickoff from the center.

Gameplay

  1. Match Duration
  • Standard games are played as: 
    • 1v1: 5-8 minutes per half
    • 2v2 & 3v3: 10-12 minutes per half
  • Halftime is 2 minutes.
  1. Scoring
  • A goal is scored when the ball fully crosses the goal line.
  • No direct shots from kickoffs.
  1. Restarts & Ball in Play
  • Kick-ins (instead of throw-ins) when the ball goes out on the sideline.
  • Goal kicks are taken from the goal line when the attacking team sends the ball out.
  • Corner kicks occur when the defending team sends the ball out behind the goal line.
  1. No Goalkeepers (Unless Modified)
  • Players must defend as a team, as no designated goalkeepers are allowed.
  • A player cannot stand in the goal for prolonged periods to act as a goalkeeper.
  1. Substitutions (For 3v3 Only)
  • Rolling substitutions (unlimited) allow players to switch on and off at any stoppage.

Winning the Game

  • The team with the most goals at the end of regulation wins.
  • If tied, the game may go into: 
    • Golden Goal (first team to score wins).
    • Penalty Shootout (each player takes a shot from a designated spot).

Additional Rules & Variations

  1. Foul Line
  • Players must kick from behind the foul line.
  • Kicks taken from beyond the line do not count.
  1. Ball Out of Play
  • If a ball goes out of bounds before hitting the pins, the kick is considered a miss (zero points).
  1. Trick Shot Mode(Optional)
  • Players can attempt curve shots, chip shots, or volleys to knock down the pins.
  1. Team Play Variation
  • Teams can alternate kickers each frame, with cumulative scores determining the winner.
